Durban - One person died and two others were injured when a car veered out of control and smashed into a tree alongside the road near Southbroom on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, paramedics said on Sunday.

Netcare 911 responded to reports of a serious car crash on an unnamed road in the Gcilima area, inland from Southbroom, late on Saturday afternoon, Netcare 911 spokesman Shawn Herbst said.

Reports from the scene indicated that the driver of a car lost control of the vehicle, which then hit a tree, in the process, splitting the car in two.

One person died and two others sustained moderate injuries. The patients were treated on the scene and transported by another private ambulance as well as government emergency medical services (EMS) to hospital for further assessment, Herbst said.
