Durban - Thousands of people gathered at Curries Fontein in Durban for a peace march against xenophobia on Thursday morning

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu, was seen flanked by presidential spouse Thobeka Mabhija, while ANC treasurer general Zweli Mkhize and eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo were also present.

A “peace bus” organised by activists Shaka Sisulu and Khaya Dlanga arrived in Durban on Thursday morning with hundreds of people from Joburg who travelled overnight to join the march.

The peace march comes after violent xenophonic attacks rocked the city of Durban over the past week. Five people have lost their lives since Friday when the attacks started.

Willies Mchunu, Speaker of Provincial Parliament was the first to address the crowd saying, “Forward with peace in Africa, and in the world.”

However, during the introductions of delegates, the crowds shouted that they want King (Goodwill) Zwelithini who has been widely blamed for the xenophobic attacks following recent public utterances.

Mchunu had to remind the crowds that the march was against xenophobia and not for it.

Members of the ANC’s Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) were then seen assaulting a man accused of stirring up trouble in the stands.
