Durban - Five people were injured, two seriously, in a head-on collision between two cars on the M1 Higginson highway near the Moorton off-ramp in Chatsworth, Durban, paramedics said on Sunday.

Rescue Care paramedics responded to the serious accident at about 3.30pm on Saturday and found the entire road blocked, Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said.

Two people were trapped in the wreckage and rescue services were immediately notified. While advanced life support paramedics treated the two trapped people, the Durban Fire Department used the jaws-of-life to cut them free.

Once freed, the two were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care. Three other people, including a teenager, sustained various injuries.

They were also stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.
