Durban - The police were publicly lashed again at the Moerane Commission on Monday by families of victims of politically motivated killings.

The commission sat in Pietermaritzburg and interviewed victims from Umsinga - tomorrow it will interview those from Estcourt.

The family of NFP PR councillor Nompumelelo Zondi of Pomeroy in Msinga, who was shot dead inside her car while it was parked outside her home, testified on Monday.

Zondi had been living in fear for months and had even fled the area because there has been several attempts on her life.

Her brother Musawenkosi Zondi said since his sister’s murder in March last year there has not been any progress in the investigation.

A task team had been set up to investigate her murder as part of the probe into political violence in the province.

"We would like different people to conduct this investigation.

"As far as we are aware no one has been arrested, there is nothing happening with the case and we do not get any update. We are the ones who have to chase after the police," he said.

"Even during my sister’s funeral, a lot of people had mentioned clues as to why my sister had been killed. We believe that the police should have followed up on some of those.”

The police representative at the commission, identified as Mr Mthokozisi Ngcobo, said they would follow up on the case and account for it to the commission at the appropriate time.

He said his sister was about to quit politics when she was killed.

"When she (his sister) was an IFP councillor there was another Nompumelelo Zondi who is a family relative. She called a local radio station to complain about the IFP. The IFP members assumed it was my sister who made the call and she was eventually forced out of the IFP."

She had grown disillusioned with politics. "When she was killed, she was about to quit politics altogether as we were putting pressure on her to quit," Zondi said.

The Zondis asked the commission to follow up with the case.
