Durban - More charges could be brought against a Durban drama teacher charged with child pornography, the State indicated on Monday.

The 48-year-old teacher appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court where the State opposed bail.

The case was adjourned to next week for a formal bail application.

His attorney, Nerissa Farrington, requested copies of the charge sheet, at which point prosecutor Nauchaad Harripersadh said more charges were likely to be added to the current, single charge of possession of child pornography.

The accused, who is employed in a drama management position at a Durban high school, and has also taught at numerous other high schools in KwaZulu-Natal, was arrested last week after police found pornographic pictures and videos of teenage boys on his laptop. The teacher was also seen in some of the videos.

At his first court appearance last Thursday, Harripersadh said the teacher had a previous conviction of indecent assault.

This incident dated from more than 20 years ago, although he was only charged and convicted in 2002/2003.

Principals of schools where the drama teacher had worked over the past 23 years were shocked by news of his arrest, saying they had never had any indication of untoward or suspicious behaviour. They also denied knowing of his previous conviction.
