Durban - A schoolboy, believed to be from Michaelhouse in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, has been killed in a bus crash on the N3, between Hilton and Pietermaritzburg.

A total of 47 more have been injured - one, critically.

Michaelhouse marketing manager Murray Witherspoon said as per the school’s information, at around 1.50pm on Tuesday a hired bus that was carrying Grade 10 boys to Kearsney College experienced a front wheel blowout.

He said the bus flipped and veered over the centre median.

Witherspoon could not immediately confirm that a child had died but ER24’s Russel Meiring said one patient had succumbed to his injuries.

Meiring said paramedics, along with several other services, arrived on the scene and found a school bus lying on its side on the side of the road.

“Two children were found to be in a critical condition while approximately 46 others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious,” Meiring said.

By the time paramedics reached the accident scene, a number of the children involved had already climbed out of the school bus and were found walking around.

Local authorities closed off the road while paramedics began assessing them.

“Paramedics immediately treated the patients and provided the seriously and critically injured with advanced life support interventions,” Meiring said.

He said the patients were being transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.

“Traffic is heavily affected in the area due to this incident,” Meiring said, “Local authorities are currently on the scene to investigate the cause of this incident”.
