Durban - With an expected viewership of just more than half a billion people, the MTV Africa Music Awards (Mamas) is the biggest media event to hit Durban and South Africa since the Fifa World Cup.

This is the first time that the Mamas are taking place in South Africa. They were previously held in Nigeria and Kenya.

American stars like Trey Songz, Migel and French Montana will all be performing at the award ceremony tomorrow night. There are expected collaborations between the American artists and African superstars like Kalawa Jazmee’s Mafikizolo, Uhuru, Professor and Oskido.

The event is to be broadcast live on MTVbase as well as music channels across Africa and the world, from 9pm Central Africa Time. Nigerian Davido and Diamond are also set to perform. The show will be hosted by US comedian Marlon Wayans.

The good-looking Songz charmed journalists and the media with his smooth talking and relaxed attitude.

“We have a surprise in the show and MTVbase have given me a nice time period to perform,” said R&B singer. “I plan to give a special performance because I don’t get to perform here that often.”

This is Songz’s second performance in Durban.

Migel told the media that fans must expect “real music”, while Uhuru’s Ma Piano said that the popular dance band would give a “crazy, mad performance”.

Kalawa dominated the press conference with Mafikizolo, who are up for four awards, saying they were hoping for at least one win on the night.

Nhlanhla Nciza said that she was nervous about tonight, as they were up against Africa’s biggest stars. However, her partner in the band, Theo Kgosinkwe, said that their tracks Khona and Happiness were massive in Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria, and he was confident they would win.

The awards are decided by public voting, which gives bigger countries like Nigeria, which also has a better internet infrastructure, a greater chance of winning.
