Striking workers protest at UKZN

Durban - Protests erupted at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus on Thursday morning.

The Varsity Drive into the university’s Westville campus was closed as vehicles were stoned by striking workers, who are demanding to be employed by the university.

A campus security vehicle was reportedly overturned by the striking workers.

A university official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that she had been forced to enter the campus using another entrance.

The university was expected to issue a statement later in the morning on the protests.

It is believed that the protesters are contract staff, primarily cleaners, who are demanding to be employed on a full-time basis.

Comment could not immediately be obtained police. It was not immediately clear whether students had joined the protests.
