Suspect in dock for killing cop during routine search

Johannesburg - A man who allegedly shot and killed a police officer has appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal on a charges of murder.

 

Lungisa Mpama, 24, allegedly gunned down Constable Sabelo Nikiwe in December 2016.

According to KwaZulu Natal police, members of the Ntuzuma crime prevention unit were patrolling Section D in Lindelani when they stopped Mpama. 

"Constable Sabelo Nikwe jumped off the police vehicle and requested to search the accused. Mpama drew a firearm and shot at Constable Nikwe and fled the scene on foot," police spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said in a statement on Tuesday. 

 

Constable Nikiwe was rushed to KwaMashu Polyclinic where he died on arrival. 

The accused was later tracked down to Westville prison where he was being held in connection with a double murder which happened at Harding in March 2017.   

He was remanded in custody and is expected to make his next appearance on November 20.
