Durban - A minibus taxi driver died when he was shot several times in Durban on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

"Just after 7am, Rescue Care paramedics were called to the corner of Selbourne Road and Hutchinson Road in Umbilo for a shooting," Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said.

"On arrival, paramedics found that a taxi driver had been shot multiple times in his vehicle. Paramedics assessed the man and found that there was nothing more paramedics could do for him due to the severity of his injuries and he was declared deceased at the scene."

At this stage, the events leading up to the shooting were unknown, but South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were on the scene and would investigate, Jamieson said.
