Durban - A teenage boy who went missing in the Richards Bay area while in a lagoon on Saturday has still not been found despite the best efforts of rescue personnel.
NSRI Richards Bay duty coxswain Norman Rautenbach said their duty crew were activated at about 1pm on Saturday following reports that a teenager had gone missing in the Amatikulu River Lagoon.
“It was reported that the teenager, aged in his late teens, a local male, was crossing the river lagoon accompanied by others when he disappeared,” he said.
“The river forms a lagoon on the Amatikulu and the river mouth is not open at present.”
Rautenbach said NSRI Richards Bay, the SAPS and a Police Search and Rescue Squad responded.
“Despite an extensive search no sign of the teenager was found and Police Search and Rescue are continuing an ongoing search operation.”
There were two confirmed drownings at dams in the province at the weekend. A 34-year-old man drowned in the Chelmsford Dam in Newcastle, his body recovered on Sunday. A 56-year-old man drowned at the Albert Falls Dam near Pietermaritzburg. It’s believed he had been on a small boat that capsized on Saturday.
