Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal - Two people burnt to death on Friday after their bakkie crashed into a gas tanker near Kokstad in KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the accident happened on the N2, about 20km from Kokstad on the road to Harding.

Emergency staff arrived on the scene to find part of the tanker and whole of the bakkie totally engulfed in flames. The tank of the Afrox gas lorry did not explode in the blaze.

The truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The Kokstad fire brigade extinguished the blaze and found the driver and passenger still sitting inside the cab of the Toyota Hilux bakkie.

Banks said they were burnt beyond recognition.

“It is believed that the driver of the bakkie lost control while going around the corner, and collided into the side of the truck.”

Comment could not be immediately obtained from the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate. - Sapa
