Durban - Two men who attempted to storm a Durban hospital over an apparent labour dispute were shot dead by security guards on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the men were shot dead at about 3am in the morning. A hospital security guard was wounded in the shootout.

On of the men succumbed to his wounds in the hospital. The body of the other man was found in the nearby Congella Park.

Police said they had arrested a 25-year-old male suspect.

KwaZulu-Natal health spokesman Desmond Motha said: “It is alleged that the intruders are part of the group of aggrieved people who are employed by outsourced security companies”.

Motha said a nurse was assaulted by the men.

KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said: “This is a very unfortunate and unnecessary incident.”

He urged aggrieved workers not to resort to violence, but to follow the proper processes to air their grievances.

The arrested man is expected to appear in court soon. The names of the dead men have not been released.
