Durban - A shocking video has surfaced showing a dog being eaten by a crocodile at the iSimangaliso Lake St Lucia Estuary in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Danielle Davenport who uploaded the video onto YouTube, she “unfortunately witnessed this attack while shooting in Isimangaliso Wetlands Park for Makhulu (a wildlife production).”

The video has garnered close to 15 000 views.

Davenport said the dog was left unattended for about 10 minutes before the attack occurred and that the dog was apparently “tormenting” the hippos and crocodiles.

Davenport, who was on the other side of the estuary recording the activities said, their owners only arrived after the scene, confused as to where the dog had gone.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park posted a statement on Facebook which read: “This unfortunate event took place because the animals were not on leashes. Visitors must please take note of the warning signage of the presence of potentially dangerous wildlife such as hippo, crocs and sharks.

"iSimangaliso is special in that dog owners are permitted to walk their pets on several of the trails and beach areas directly adjacent to the St Lucia town area ... outside of the Big 5 game fence.

“However they should always be leashed for the protection of both dogs and wildlife, which is prolific in the area.”

Davenport said the reason she uploaded the video is to bring an educational warning for all those travelling to and living in close proximity to wildlife.
