Durban - A woman in her 30s was killed when the car she was travelling in crashed into a tree on the M1 Higginson highway near Havenside in Chatsworth, Durban on Sunday morning, paramedics said.
Rescue Care Paramedics arrived on the scene just after 10.10am "to find carnage", Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said.
"The female passenger who was entrapped in the wreckage was assessed and found to have sustained major injuries. Unfortunately there was nothing more paramedics could do for her and she was declared deceased on the scene. The driver had sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene by paramedics."
Traffic was severely affected as emergency personnel worked on the scene, and only one lane was open for vehicles to pass.

At this stage, the events leading up to the car leaving the road and crashing into the tree were unknown, Jamieson said.
