Polokwane - Police have arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly exhuming his mother's remains and keeping them in the house at Dithabaneng village in Ga-Mphahlele, Limpopo.

Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the man went to the local cemetery last December 2017 and dug up his mother's remains. She was buried in 2001.

''Members of the community noticed him moving around the village carrying a human skull and called the police. Upon arrival, police they found a full human skeleton in the suspect's house. A lot of cattle bones were also found in the same house,'' Ngoepe said.

''Furthermore, it emerged that the suspect sometimes carried his mother's skull inside a bag when he goes to shopping centres and banks, as he believes that will protect him from any danger.''

The man will appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate's Court soon on a charge of violating a grave.
