Polokwane - National assembly member Jack Smalle was elected as the new DA leader for Limpopo at the party's provincial congress in Polokwane on Saturday.

He replaces Desiree Van der Walt after the fiercely contested election.

Smalle emerged victorious after four contestants were eliminated in the voting.

Before the election started, Democratic Alliance leader Hellen Zille warned delegates not to vote for their leadership on the basis of race.

She said that racial favour could cost the party in its fight for more seats in the provincial governments.

Four years ago, Van der Walt ousted Mike Holfford in an election that saw some black leaders defecting to African National Congress and Congress of People.

Some delegates accuse Van der Walt of ruling with iron fist and making it difficult for the structures to operate by imposing decisions on them.

They said it was a reason she lost her position.

The contests for other positions were underway on Saturday afternoon with delegates expected to nominate a deputy leader and chairperson. - Sapa
