Johannebsurg - Two boys drowned while swimming in the Mohlaletse River in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo police said on Monday. 

South African Police Services spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the two were part of a group of children from the local community who went swimming at the river on Sunday.

''Two of them got stuck deep in the water and drowned. One of the boys ran to the village to call for help. Community members entered the water and retrieved the boys. Police and emergency services reacted swiftly and upon arrival, they certified them dead at the scene,'' said Ngoepe. 

The boys, both of whom are 11 years old, were identified as Tukelo Mahlanya and Moruthanyana Mahlanya. 

An inquest into the deaths of the two younsgters has been opened.
