Johannesburg - Police in Limpopo have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly killing his teenage nephew after accusing the boy of stealing his cash.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the incident took place in Mphagani village near Giyani on Tuesday.

''It is alleged that 14 -year-old boy Akani Shiviti from Tikyline village outside Tzaneen was physically assaulted by his uncle with an electric cable and later found dead on his bed. He was being accused of breaking into his uncle's house and stealing R1000 cash,'' Ngoepe said.

Shiviti had visited his uncle for the duration of the school holidays.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba condemned the uncle's actions: ''Child discipline cannot be done through the excessive use of force ,this is totally uncalled for,'' he said.

The man is expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of murder.
