More name changes

Names on street signs may soon be changed again - this time around with their spelling corrected.

In a report tabled at eThekwini's executive committee meeting yesterday, city leaders agreed on a report on the changing of some of the region's well-known names, from their anglicised versions to the correct Zulu spelling.

The list of river and place names will be submitted to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Geographic Names Committee, and then forwarded to the minister of arts and culture for approval.

The committee wants the names, and the name for the new airport, to be adopted speedily.

Some of the names are:

Inanda to eNanda;

kwaMnyandu railway station to KwaMnyandu;

kwaMakhuta township to KwaMakhuta;

uMgeni River to uMngeni (it means river of acacia trees);

eMgeni Village to eMingeni;

Amanzimtoti Town to aManzamtoti (means tasty waters);

Amanzimtoti River to eManzamtoti;

Umhlanga Town to uMhlanga Rocks (means reed and rocks);

uMbongintwini Village to eZimbokodweni;

Umlazi/Umlaas Township to eMlaza (means whey);

Umlazi/Umlaas River to uMlaza;

Congella Town to KwaKhangela;

Umkhomaas River to uMkhomazi (means a female whale);

Umkomaas Village to eMkhomazi;

Umhlali Town to eMhlali;

Umhlali River to uMhlali;

Tongaat Town to oThongathi (means it is something because of us);

Tongaat River to uThongathi.
