10 killed, two injured in R23 car crash

Johannesburg - Ten people, including a toddler, died after a bakkie and a car were involved in a head-on collision in Mpumalanga, the provincial department of community safety, security and liaison said.

The incident took place on the R23 between Standerton and Balfour on Monday morning. 

Mpumalanga department of community safety, security and liaison spokesperson Joseph Mabuza explained how the incident unfolded. 

"The Avanza, believed to be travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng using the R23, collided with the bakkie and a result, both vehicles caught fire," he said.

The accident claimed the lives of 10 people, including a toddler, and left two others, the driver of the bakkie and a passenger in the Avanza, injured. 

Mabuza confirmed that the driver of the bakkie was in a critical condition while the passenger was in a serious condition. 

"We're currently in the process of identifying the deceased as some of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition," Mabuza added.
