Johannesburg – A bud driver was killed and 30 others were injured on Wednesday morning after two buses collided on the R669 in Kwa-Mhlanga, Mpumalanga, ER24 reported.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said when paramedics and other emergency services arrived at the crash site shortly after 6am they found two bus wreckages on the side of the road.

“On inspection, paramedics found the lifeless body of one of the bus drivers lying inside the bus. The driver lay trapped from the waist down and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for the patient and he was later declared dead,” said Meiring.

At least 30 other passengers from both buses had been injured.

Rescue officers from the provincial services had to use the jaws-of-life to gain access to the buses to allow paramedics to safely extricate the injured.

Assessments showed that roughly 30 patients, from both buses, had sustained only minor injuries. Fortunately, no other fatalities or serious injuries were reported on the scene.

The injured were treated on the scene and later taken to various hospitals.

“It is understood that the early morning mist may have been a contributing factor to the cause of the collision, but local authorities were on scene for further investigations,” said Meiring.
