Johannesburg - Residents of Zamimpilo informal settlement near Riverlea, south of Johannesburg blocked roads and burnt tyres demanding houses on Wednesday morning, the Johannesburg metro police said.

The protesters claimed they had been promised houses by the government and were now demanding them.

Spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said passing vehicles along Main Reef road were stoned by protesters.

“Officers are in the area diverting traffic to Springbok Road, the Soweto highway and Ondekkers Road. Main Reef and Commando roads are not yet accessible,” Minnaar said.

Protesters also went up the N1 highway and stoned passing cars from a bridge.

Minnaar warned motorists to avoid the area until calm has been restored. No arrests have been made.
