Mpumalanga -

Parliament's portfolio committee on transport is to visit the site of a crash between a truck and a coal train in Mpumalanga last week.

“The purpose of the visit is to offer condolences to the families of those who died, and also to gather facts on the cause of the accident,” Parliament's communication service said on Wednesday.

This would enable it to prevent similar tragedies.

On Thursday, the committee would attend a memorial service for the 25 people killed in the crash on Friday before visiting the injured in hospital.

On Saturday, it would attend the funeral of those killed in the crash.

Truck driver George Mandlazi, 32, has been denied bail by the Barberton Magistrate's Court, and will be back in court on August 14.

The truck was carrying farm workers when it collided with a coal train at a level crossing on the N4 between Malelane and Hectorspruit. - Sapa
