Cape Town - A man was arrested at Karino, near Nelspruit for being in possession of counterfeit sneakers estimated to be worth more than R5 million, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.

According to a statement, a member of a private security firm received a tip-off about a truck that was coming from Komatipoort driving towards Nelspruit, en route to Johannesburg. The company waited at the Nkomazi tollgate, at Kaapmuiden to verify the information received.

"As soon as the truck came, [the security company] followed it while notifying members of the South African Police Service’s Whiteriver K-9 Unit up to Karino, near Nelspruit. On their arrival, they pulled it off the road and demanded to search it leading to the arrest of the 33-year-old suspect after the goods were found hidden behind crates in the vehicle," police said.

The man is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court Thursday, facing a possession of counterfeit goods charge.
