Johannesburg - A 48-year-old school principal from Piet Retief in Mpumalanga, who faces allegations of raping a 15-year-old schoolgirl, has been remanded in custody in Nelspruit.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mtsholi Bhembe said the accused appeared in court on Wednesday to face multiple rape charges.

"He allegedly raped the learner since she was aged 15 in 2014, up until her current age. It is further reported that the learner eventually became pregnant in the process and gave birth to a baby," said Bhembe.

The suspect will be back before the same court next Wednesday.
