Johannesburg – A man was killed and 51 others injured Monday morning after a truck rolled down an embankment near Sabie in Mpumalanga.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the accident occurred off the R536 between Sabie and White River.

“ER24 paramedics, along with provincial services, arrived on scene and found the large truck halfway down a steep embankment.”

Meiring said that it was understood that the driver of the truck lost control, causing the vehicle to crash down the embankment and eject most of the workers who had been on the back of the truck.

On inspection, paramedics found the lifeless body of a man lying on the embankment.

“Unfortunately the man had already succumbed to his injuries prior to the arrival of paramedics.”

He said nothing more could be done for the man and he was declared dead on scene.

“Fifty one other patients were found on scene with injuries ranging from minor to serious,” Meiring said.

Meiring said a triage area was set up while paramedics began their assessment and treated the injured. Once treated, the patients were transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
