Johannesburg - A 13-year-old boy and seven-year-old girl were killed Wednesday morning in a collision between a light motor vehicle and bakkie on the N12, about 5km outside of Witbank, Mpumalanga, ER24 said.

Paramedics found a light motor vehicle and bakkie lying on one side of the road blocking the traffic. The entire back section of the light motor vehicle had been completely smashed.

“On inspection, paramedics found the lifeless bodies of two children lying inside the light motor vehicle. The boy was found lying trapped in the rear of the vehicle while the girl was found in the front passenger seat,” said ER24 in a statement.

Paramedics found that the young boy had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries. He was declared dead on scene.

“The young girl was rapidly extricated from the vehicle and found to be in a critical condition. Paramedics began CPR and advanced life support interventions. Unfortunately, after some time, no vital signs returned and she was declared dead,” said ER24.

Both male drivers were found to have only sustained minor injuries. They were treated and taken to a hospital in Witbank.

ER24 said it was believed that the driver of the light motor vehicle swerved to avoid a tyre in the middle of the road. He apparently lost control of the vehicle, slid across the centre medium and collided with the bakkie in oncoming traffic.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
