Leslie - The Mpumalanga police commissioner on Wednesday condemned last week's attack of an elderly bus driver by two pupils he was transporting.
This comes a day after footage emerged showing the pupil verbally and physically attack the driver, 61, as he transports him and his fellow pupils from Leslie to Secunda.
It's unclear what sparked the attack but in the clip shared online, the boy can be seen repeatedly hitting the elderly man.
Another pupil was also reportedly involved in the assault but this was not captured in the footage.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma in a statement condemned the "unbecoming conduct by young people who don't show or have respect for adults".
"Information at the police's disposal suggests that the driver stopped for other pupils to board the bus when the two pupils also boarded.
"They then asked the driver why he had left them behind at the previous pick-up point and before he could respond, they began kicking and punching him on the face, to everyone’s surprise, while the bus was in motion thereby clearly putting the lives of the other learners in peril."
The matter was reported to the police and a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) was opened, with the duo being arrested last week Thursday.
Zuma confirmed that the two appeared at the Leslie magistrate’s Court on September 14, 2018, and that one of the boys was released to his parents’ custody while the other was released on a warning.
They will appear again on 10 October 2018, at the same court.
Zuma urged parents to intervene in shaping the behaviour of their children. He also encouraged them to search their children's school bags on a regular basis for dangerous weapons and even drugs.
