New defence force appointments

Maj-General V R Masono has been appointed as Chief of the SA Army with effect from Saturday, with Maj-Gen L Rudman as his deputy, Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has announced.

Lt-Gen C Gagiano was appointed as Chief of the SA Air Force with Maj-Gen G Malinga as his deputy, and V-Adm J Mudimu as Chief of the SA Navy with R-Adm MS Hlongwane as deputy, the department of defence said in a statement.

It said the Chief of SA National Defence Force (SANDF), General Solly Shoke, had extended his congratulations to the officers on their appointments.

Sisulu also appointed Lt-Gen DM Mgwebi as Chief of Joint Operations and Brig-Gen ME Phako as deputy chief, with a promotion to the rank of major-general.

Lt-Gen VI Ramlakan was made Surgeon General of the SA Military Health Service, with Brig-Gen LJ Smith (promoted to major-general) as deputy. Ramlakan was also named chief of corporate staff designate

The position of chief of the department of defence intelligence would be held by Lt-Gen AM Shilubane, and that of deputy chief by Maj-Gen JM Nyembe.

Chief of human resources would be Maj-Gen TM Nkabinde, promoted to lieutenant-general, and deputy Maj-Gen NE Memela-Motumi, while chief of logistics would be Maj-Gen JT Nkonyane, also promoted to lieutenant-general. - Sapa
