Madibeng, North West - An ANC party representative councillor in Madibeng, North West, died on Wednesday, apparently after being shot with a rubber bullet at Marikana over the weekend.

The Friends of the Youth League said in a statement that the woman died in hospital after allegedly being shot by police on Saturday.

Police spokesman Captain Dennis Adriao could not confirm the woman's death.

Spokesman for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, Moses Dlamini, said he had not heard of the woman's death.

However, spokesman for the North West provincial government, Lesiba Kgwele, confirmed the woman had died.

“Executive mayor of Bojanala Platinum District Municipality Louis Diremelo is there at the mortuary, and confirms the death.”

The woman's name could not be released until her next of kin were informed.

The cause of death could not be established yet, as a post mortem had yet to be conducted.

Kgwele said Premier Thandi Modise had appealed for calm and urged the relevant authorities to investigate the matter, if it was found that the woman did not die of natural causes.

“The Premier conveys her condolences to the family and said the provincial government would do anything possible to show them support,” Kgwele said.

The African National Congress in the province also extended its condolences to the family.

Spokesman Kenny Morolong said the party learned of the woman's death with shock.

“We are not in a position to confirm her cause of death, and will await the medical report before commenting further.

“We call on members of the public to desist from speculating on the cause of her death, as this can only be conclusively determined though a professional autopsy.” - Sapa
