Klerksdorp, North West -

Five people were killed and three others injured when a light motor vehicle and heavy goods truck collided head-on on the Ottosdal Road near Klerksdorp in the North West on Friday evening, paramedics said.

The cause of the accident and the series of events preceding it remained unclear and would form the subject of an SA Police Service investigation, said Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks.

“Common cause information dictates that an errant party veered from their allocated lane and pushed into oncoming traffic. The two collided and the truck came to rest on top of the car, crushing it completely.”

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that two adults and two young children, a boy and a girl aged between four and five, had been killed.

They were declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck also sustained critical injuries from which he died.

His two passengers, and one surviving occupant of the car, were treated and stabilised at the scene and transported by ambulance to a nearby state medical facility, said Wicks. - Sapa
