Rustenburg - Gunmen left empty-handed after a failed cash-in-transit heist in Majakaneng south of Brits in the North West province, police said on Tuesday.

National police spokeswoman, Colonel Brenda Muridili, said gunmen fired several shots at a cash van on the N4 near the Majakaneng offramp on Monday at 19:00.

One tyre of the cash van was hit. The driver stopped the vehicle and when the gunmen approached he sped off on the flat tyre and only stopped when he arrived at a filling station to get help.

She said no injuries were reported.
