Lichtenburg - A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and attempting to murder a 10-year-old boy in Itsoseng near Lichtenburg, North West police said on Sunday.

Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the man was arrested after he called the boy's family and demanded a ransom. "The police managed during the investigation to get and interview the suspect who disclosed where the child was. The latter was found still alive inside a disused drain just outside Verdwaal village near Itsoseng on Friday, 1 September 2017."

The boy was reunited with his family after undergoing a medical examination which confirmed that he was healthy. Preliminary investigations had revealed that the boy was kept at two other separate places, including inside another drain at a local sports ground.

The boy was reported missing on August 25 after he did not return from school. A search for the boy was launched and during the process the man called the boy’s family and demanded a ransom. The man was expected to to appear in the Itsoseng Magistrate's Court on Monday, Mokgwabone said.
