Rustenburg - A woman and child were killed while a third person was injured after car crashed into a concrete pillar just outside Rustenburg, paramedics said on Thursday.

The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday night on the N4 Highway just before the Mooinooi turnoff.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived on the scene at around 10.40pm and found the car split in two pieces on the side of the road.

"The bodies of a woman, believed to be in her 30s, and a baby girl, believed to be a year old, was found lying approximately 30 metres away from the light motor vehicle.

"A third patient, a man, was found walking around on the scene."

Paramedics then assessed the patients and found that the woman and child had sustained fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were both declared dead on the scene.

Meiring added that the man meanwhile, was found to have sustained only minor injuries.

"The man was treated for his injuries and was thereafter transported to Brits Provincial Hospital for further treatment," he said.

Meiring said that local authorities were on the scene to investigate the cause of the collision.
