Rustenburg – Six people were killed and four other people were critically injured on Thursday, when a truck and a 26-seater bus collided on the N4, near Rustenburg, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said that paramedics and local rescue services arrived on the scene at around 5.30pm and found that several people were scattered across the scene.

"At least six people were found with fatal injuries. Four people, including a child believed to be approximately eight years old, sustained critical injuries. Several people were found trapped inside of the midi-bus," he said.

"The local fire and rescue services had to use rescue tools to free some of the trapped victims inside the vehicle. It is believed that approximately 25 people were involved in the collision."

Vermaak said that the exact circumstances of the collision were unknown but that it appeared that the cement truck collided into the side of the midi-bus. "Three medical helicopters were dispatched to the scene to airlift the critically injured patients," Vermaak said.
