Rustenburg - The Rustenburg taxi rank was shut down for most of Tuesday by taxi operators who were blocking all entrances in a protest to demand the release of a minibus impounded by police.
"We had a meeting with the police management, all they want is for the driver to come and make a statement as the taxi was linked to an incident of crime," said Serame Sebego, chairperson of Northern Taxi Council.
The minibus taxi's registration number is visible in a cellphone video taken as the vehicle was leaving the scene of the crime on Sunday. Occupants of the taxi were alleged to have robbed a Nigerian national.
On Friday a Nigerian man was found dead at a stream near the golf course. It was alleged that he was bundled into a minibus taxi together with another Nigerian man. The other man was released unharmed.
Seventeen Nigerian men have since been arrested for public violence and possession of dangerous weapon, after they allegedly attacked residents of Rustenburg Noord in a suspected revenge attack on Sunday.
