Johannesburg - A public safety official was startled when a car accident took place in the background of an interview with SABC television news about the state of a North West road notorious for accidents.

The province's public safety portfolio committee chairman, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng, whistled as he turned around to see what had happened.

“This guy (the motorist), what is he doing?” he said.

Before the car, which had been towing another car, drove past, Mahlakeng told the SABC that the Lichtenburg-Koster road continued to be a problem.

“As we speak, the road continues to kill our people,” he said.

“The road continues to be more expensive ... The last amount that we were given by the department was R220 million, that was spent already on this particular road.”

Just then, a car towing another passes, veers off the road, and they come to a halt, one car on its side on a small embankment.

They narrowly missed a pedestrian, who had run to safety.

The SABC footage was posted on YouTube a short while later and by 10am it had been viewed over 300 times.

Internet user Sbongiseni Mazibuko responded: “News worth watching...”

Another user, Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, said: “This is too perfect, it couldn't have been staged.”

Another person commented: “Classic.”
