Johannesburg - Three people were killed and three others seriously injured when two cars collided on the N4 near Swartruggens, North West police said on Thursday.

A Toyota Avanza travelling from Zeerust to Swartruggens collided with a Land Cruiser going in the opposite direction on Wednesday afternoon, Colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

A child travelling in the Land Cruiser died at the Swartruggens Hospital later that day. The Toyota Avanza driver and a passenger also died.

The Avanza caught fire and the driver was trapped in the car. The passenger was found outside the car.

Three other adults in the Avanza sustained serious injuries. Police were not immediately able to confirm the child's age and whether the injured were still in hospital.
