Brits – The time is ripe for a woman to lead the African National Congress, ANC Women's League deputy president Sesi Ntombela told the league's North West elective conference in Brits this weekend.

"It has been 105 years we elected men [to lead]; we even sing song about them. It is our time now," she said.

"We need women, we want to build this organisation, 105 years, oh please, we do not have woman president."

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was "one of them", but this time they wanted a woman president.

"This is our time, we do not just want an ordinary woman. We want Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, she is not just a woman, she is educated... 105 years men, it is enough," she said.

The ANC is expected to open its succession debate in September. The Congress of South African Trade Unions and the South African Communist Party have openly backed Ramaphosa to lead the ANC, in line with the ANC tradition that the deputy president becomes the president.

Similarly, the ANCWL has on several occasions expressed its support for Dlamini Zuma, a former African Union Commission chairwoman, to take over the position from her ex husband President Jacob Zuma at the ANC elective conference in December.

The new North West ANCWL leadership was elected unopposed at the conference.

Fetsang Mokati retained her position as provincial chairwoman. Her deputy is Mimo Nobatana, while Bridgette Mogakwe retained her position as provincial secretary. Her deputy is Bitsa Lenkopane and Manketse Tlhape was elected provincial treasurer.
