Kimberley - The general worker who was arrested in connection with the brutal attack on an elderly couple who employed him on their smallholding near Kuruman, is believed to have committed suicide by hanging himself at the Kathu police station on Thursday.

The man was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of Danie “Kat” Fourie, 70, as well as the vicious assault on his wife Mariaan, 63.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sergio Kock, said that police discovered the suspect’s body inside the Kathu police station holding cells on Thursday morning.

“The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated. The outcome of police investigations will determine whether the case will be closed,” said Kock.

Fourie, 70, is believed to have been stabbed to death and his body dumped on a plot in Seoding village, near Kuruman, during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The police found Mariaan, who had been severely assaulted and her hands bound, inside the couple’s Isuzu bakkie, which had been abandoned in the veld along the N14, on Wednesday morning.

The police arrested the 31-year-old suspect along the N14 near Kuruman on Wednesday and confiscated a .38 special revolver, which is believed to have belonged to the deceased.
