Johannesburg - The North West University on Friday paid tribute to former president Nelson Mandela and said it would pray for his family.
“Yesterday (Thursday), South Africa and the rest of the world lost an iconic leader who not only shaped the history of South Africa, but also played a pivotal role in contributing to the fight for democracy,” said vice-chancellor Theuns Eloff in a statement.
“His influence went way beyond his beloved country and his struggle for racial equality extended throughout the world.”
Eloff sent his condolences to Mandela's family and fellow South Africans.
“The NWU acknowledges, with gratitude towards our heavenly father, the gifts that were bestowed upon Nelson Mandela, which he used so well in the interest of his country and humanity,” said Eloff.
“Our former president's wisdom, compassion and resolve to establish a non-racial democracy will remain monuments to his life's work. We will remember.”
