Johannesburg - The department of transport is ready for the traffic rush as the Easter break draws to a close and commuters return home, Minister Ben Martins said on Sunday.
Martins and his deputy Sindisiwe Chikunga had travelled to busy roads encouraging road safety.
“We want to re-emphasise the need to exercise extra caution and obey all the rules of the road without exception at all times.We can reduce road fatalities by keeping to the set legal speed limit, driving when we are fit to do so, by ensuring that our vehicles are roadworthy, by wearing seatbelts at all times, and not drinking and driving and not drinking and walking,” Martins said.
The death toll on the roads during Easter had reduced from 300 in 2011 to 171 in 2012.
During the low traffic period officials had been focussing on towns and residential areas. Now the main focus would be back on the main roads as commuters headed back home.
“As of (Sunday), officials will begin preparing for the long drives back as the long weekend draws to a close. They will continue to focus their attention on the major routes, i.e. N1, N2, N3 and N4.” Martins warned that those who broke the law would deal with the consequences.
“Those who drink and drive will be arrested immediately without negotiations and risk having their driving licences cancelled. Those who drive at break-neck speeds, your unlawful conduct will deliver you in our hands and we will act decisively,” he said. - Sapa
