PICS: Marches and meals - How SA celebrated #MandelaDay

Cape Town - Mandela Day was celebrated by thousands across the country on Tuesday, with activities ranging from packing meals to marching on city streets.

In Cape Town, hundreds of people led by The Elders gathered for a symbolic march to honour Nelson Mandela.

Meanwhile in Mabopane, children took to the streets to celebrate Mandela's birthday.

Plascon, Danville Park Girls’ School, Blue Security, churches in conjunction with other schools painted the Alladin School's playground.

RISE against Hunger did their bit when employees from Sun International, ABSA, Ecolab, Merieux Nutriscience and NCP Chlorchem packaged meals.

On Tuesday, the Nelson Mandela Champion Tree in Soweto was declared a heritage site. 

The tree was planted by Mandela in 2008 as part of a tree-planting campaign.
