Bafana Bafana football star, Quinton Fortune, claims he is in dire straits financially, according to papers filed with the Cape High Court by his estranged wife - but she does not believe him.

Kim Fortune, 31, said while statements of the former Manchester United player's Royal Bank of Scotland accounts showed an overdraft of more than £65 000 (R942 000), on close scrutiny they revealed he had been dining out, shopping and spending on entertainment.

Fortune had also sent tens of thousands of rands to his family in South Africa, she said in an application for personal maintenance, pending the finalisation of their divorce.

Kim said she had been trying to settle the matter amicably, but that her husband had not been responding to her settlement proposals.

She moved to the United Kingdom in 1999 to live with Fortune, and the couple married in January 2002.

After six years of marriage, she instituted divorce proceedings against him and also lodged an application for maintenance of R50 000 a month, pending the outcome of the divorce.

She alleged that he had been having extramarital affairs, and had left the UK in January.

She asked the court to order the soccer star to buy her an Audi S3 automatic, fitted with the extras she was used to, including a black silk nappa leather interior, a R5 000 sound system, sunroof, satellite navigation with a colour screen, an iPod console, 18-inch alloy wheels, exclusive bucket seats to the value of R37 000, as well as seat heating, folding heated mirrors, adaptive lights and a six-disc CD changer.

She also estimated that it would cost R550 000 to furnish her flat.

She had only a bed, couch and coffee machine in her flat in the city centre, because her husband had refused to allow her to remove her possessions from the home they had shared in Manchester valued at about R2-million, when she moved out.

The case is expected to go to court at the end of September.
