Parliament - The haggling is set to begin in Parliament's portfolio committee on communications as they try to put together a shortlist of 36 candidates to be interviewed as possible South African Broadcasting Corporation board members.

During a meeting on Tuesday morning, each party read out a list of their preferred candidates.

Many names were common to the lists. They include members of the current interim board, as well as former Icasa councillors William Currie and Nomvuyo Batyi.

Former board members Rachel Kalidass, Desmond Golding and Krish Naidoo also featured on some parties' lists.

Former SABC news head Snuki Zikalala was also favoured by the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

MPs are expected to whittle this list down to 36. These names will then be made public.

Individuals and civil society organisations would then be given five working days to comment before the interview process gets underway.

Interviews have been set down for three days.

The term of the interim board ends towards the end of next month, so MPs would have to recommend 12 names to President Jacob Zuma for approval.
