Former Egoli star Shaleen Surtie-Richards will press the button in Saturday's Lotto draw and hopes to send a fortune winging its way to a lucky player or two.

Surtie-Richards, who is currently performing on stage, said she spends between R15 and R2 000 every week on lottery tickets.

"I don't play any particular set of numbers because there is no foolproof method of winning," she said.

"The fun is in the mystery. Winning is nothing but the sheer magic of luck. From time to time I use birthday details of friends and relatives, but that's just for the rhythm."

Her stage and television career spans 25 years.

For the past 10 years Surtie-Richards has starred in the popular soapie Egoli, in which she has wooed audiences as Nenna with her wit, charm and assertive personality.

"After a decade in the TV drama I needed to take a break and explore other avenues and opportunities. Nenna is still visiting abroad, and the door is open for her return," she said.

The 46-year-old recently featured in a play by South African Richard Rive entitled Buckingham Palace District Six.

She said the play had earned critical acclaim because it was an authentic testimony of forced removals during the apartheid era.

Originally from Cape Town, Surtie-Richards has won more than 20 merit awards, including the prestigious Fleur de Cap and Vita awards.

Her winning numbers for this week's draw are 6, 7, 13, 19, 21 and 29. - Staff Reporter
