A hostage drama at Engcobo in the Eastern Cape ended on Wednesday morning with one of the hostage takers committing suicide, police spokeswoman Superintendent Nondumiso Jafta said.

She said the other hostage taker surrendered to police after the suicide.

A man and a pregnant woman from the Employment Bureau of Africa (Teba) were held hostage at the bureau's office from about 8.30am.

The hostage takers demanded a key to a safe and R20 000 for the release of the man and woman.

Jafta said the woman was handed to police after an undisclosed amount of money was given to the hostage takers at about 3.41am.

The hostage taker then shot himself dead at about 5.05am.

She said the second hostage taker then gave himself up at about 5.12am.

Jafta said the man and woman were not harmed.

The hostage taker would appear in court soon, she said. - Sapa
