Cape Town – Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday briefed the media on his strategic planning for the first 100 days in office.

He warned that there is a 'sheriff in town' as he plans to clamp down on crime.

"Use your cellphone to report criminality. This is what I will do," he said when speaking about plans to implement an app that will be used to deal with the issue of crime.

Mbalula encourages people to report acts of criminality from all, even if they are a colleague or your partner.

After stating that Zimbabwean ex-soldiers rob and promote criminality, he insists that the comment is not xenophobic. "There are highly educated Zimbabweans who are working in our kitchens but there are ex-soldiers who are criminals."

"We mustn't respond to bank robbers with a revolver. They come with machine guns. We will respond to them equally," he continued, emphasising that the TRT will remain to execute its job.

Despite the eye-for-an-eye approach, he is not for use of force. "I am, not saying use force recklessly. I am against that. I am against use of force recklessly."

He also has plans for SAPS. "Police must have proper houses. I need to look after police so they themselves can reward us."
