Johannesburg - Three women were killed and ten other people injured on Tuesday morning when a bakkie rear-ended another bakkie on the R555, about 10km outside of Middelburg in Mpumalanga.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said ER24 paramedics, along with other emergency services, arrived on the scene at 07h31 to find the one bakkie on the side of the road, while the other was found approximately 100 metres away in the middle of the road. Several bodies were found lying around the scene and along the road.

Paramedics assessed the patients and found that three women had sustained fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for them and they were declared dead on the scene.

Ten other patients were found on the scene. Assessments showed that two were in a critical condition, while eight others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

Paramedics treated the patients and provided the two critically injured with advanced life support interventions.

Once treated, one of the critically injured patients was airlifted by the ER24 Oneplan Helicopter to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The remaining patients were transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.

It is understood that several people had been on the rear of the one bakkie and had been ejected off when the two vehicles collided.

The exact cause of the collision was not immediately clear but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
